How to get Unity 5

How to get Unity 5

This tutorial is going to get you up and running with Unity 5, focusing on how to download and install Unity 5.

I'm only able to give instructions for Windows/PC, so you won't find details on how to do this with a Mac, but once you see how simple this is on Windows, it shouldn't be too difficult to apply the same process.

Before we get started, do you know the difference between Unity 5's Personal Edition and Pro Editions? Really short version: Personal is free; Pro has a fee! You can find out more information at the download link below:

Starting the download...

You no longer download the full installer straight from the website, you download a small program which will manage the download and installation for you, that's the first step.

  1. Go to
  2. Personal Edition: Click on the "Free Download" button under the "Personal Edition" column.
  3. Pro Edition: You'll need to click through to purchasing your license (although I believe you might be able to download Personal Edition then upgrade it, but don't quote me on that!)
  4. You'll be taken to another screen, where you will see the button to download the installer (you can change to the Mac version here under the "Platform" column; click the downward arrow next to "Windows") - click it!
  5. Take note of where you are downloading the installer to.
  6. NOTE: You will see another drop-down here labelled as "Additional Downloads". This is where you can separately download 32-bit or 64-bit version of the Unity Editor, Built in Shaders, Standard Assets, the Example Project as well as the torrent for an alt download. These are optionals, I just thought it worth point them out, as they are easily missed.

How to Install the Unity Editor

So now you have downloaded the Unity Editor (see: How to get the Unity Editor), it's time to install it. As with the downloading, installing Unity is a pretty straight forward process. Follow these steps to install Unity:

  1. Find the Unity Editor installer file you downloaded previously.
  2. Double-Click the installer to start the installation.
    • Windows may ask you to confirm if you wish to run the program; Choose Run.
  3. When the installer launches, click Next.
  4. Agree to the License Agreement by clicking I Agree.
  5. Click Next on the Choose Components screen (leaving options at default).
  6. Choose a location to download installation files to, and where to install the Unity Editor to (default works fine), then click on Install to start Download and Installation process.
  7. NOTE: This will likely take a while, even with a good connection, as the installation part itself is quite lengthy.

While it's downloading, you can move on to creating a Unity Account...

How to create a Unity account

In this section, we'll go over creating a new Unity Account. Now, as you'll notice when you first launch Unity, you don't actually need an account to use Unity. There is an option to launch Unity as a guest, and not provide any account details. So why would you need to create an account, if you're going to use the personal version? Answer: The Unity Store. If you want to download anything from the Unity Store, you'll need to sign in with a Unity Account; personal or pro. There are free assets on the Unity Store, such as the standard assets packs, which is useful to get you up and running with basic things in your early projects. You'll also need a Unity Account to make use of the Unity Community forums, too. If you're still not convinced you need an account, then please feel free to skip on to the next section. Below are the steps needed to create a new Unity Account.

  1. Go to
  2. Enter your details in the fields provided, including solving the security question.
  3. Tick the box to agree to the Unity Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
  4. I'll let you use your own judgement on what to do with the "Get Unity news, discounts and more!" tickbox! :)
  5. Click the "Create Account" button.
  6. Log in to your email (the one used to create your account) and confirm your email address.

Your account is now created, confirmed and ready to be used with the Unity Editor, Unity Store and the Unity Community.

Once the installation is complete, you will see the Completing the Unity Setup screen; click Finish (Optional: Untick the "Launch Unity" tickbox first).

Unity should now be installed. If you encounter any problems with the installation, please check Unity's Community for assistance.
